Can You Transfer Game Save Data From Xbox One To PS4? (Find Out!)

I have always had an Xbox and a PlayStation and thought to myself, wouldn’t it be cool to transfer game save data across both systems! I didn’t know if it was possible, so I researched the internet trying to find out.

In almost all cases you cannot transfer save data from an Xbox One to the PS4, only in multi-platform games like Rocket League where the data is backed up on a cloud server can cross-platform saves be moved from different systems.

The PS4 and Xbox One have completely different operating systems, and they are competitors so it’s in both company’s best interest, to have cross saves not possible. I will explain why and also if you can transfer your GTA and Call Of Duty accounts across platforms!

Why You Cannot Transfer Save Data From Xbox One To PS4

You just bought a fresh copy of Red Dead Redemption 2 and want to transfer all your progress from your Xbox One to your PS4 Pro, why can’t you do this?

Like the PC and the Xbox One, the PS4 and Xbox One have completely different operating systems and file types and unlike a MacBook and a PC, they cannot read the same data.

Just look at the differences between the PS4 and the Xbox One’s security systems, the PS4 has been soft modded numerous times but the Xbox One still to this day has never been hacked, check my post here to see why.

Sony and Microsoft are direct competitors so why would they cooperate with each other to make game saves transferrable between systems? If this was true then there is very little reason to buy one console over the other which hurts both companies.

If your game data is cross-platform like Fortnite or Rocket league game, everything is saved on the cloud and very little is based on your PS4 so transferring saves is easy.

To understand more about cross-platform gaming and how it works, please check this post.

But why would developers not make cross saves more possible? Different consoles and PCs have different BIOS which is is the console or PCs output/input system, that affect how your device boots up after you turn it on, and different decoding options making cross saves difficult to create.

Every console and specific games would need separate modifications for cross saves, and there isn’t enough interest for developers to make it a fully supported function.

However, you can transfer Xbox One saved data game files into a USB for storage purposes, as if your Xbox One is between 500GB and 1TB it will often run out of space(see why here), see below for a guide on how to transfer data to a USB.

This doesn’t mean you can insert your saved Xbox One game files into your PS4 and it was magically run with the USB as the Xbox will not understand the files, It’s kinda like putting an MP4 file into a stereo and expecting it will work!

Can You Transfer A GTA Character From Xbox One To PS4?

You cannot transfer GTA characters from PS4 TO Xbox and Rockstar removed character transfers from PC to after the March 6th, 2017 update, as hackers were modding accounts on PS3/Xbox 360 then selling them by transferring to PS4.

To understand more about why you cannot transfer characters please check my link on Rockstars history with modders here.
