How good is the PS5s GPU? (an expert opinion)

Since graphics cards are very expensive these days, the pricing of the next-generation consoles namely the PS5 and Xbox Series X make them a very tempting purchase for gamers. If you are interested in upgrading your gaming setup then you must wonder whether you should go with a new graphics card or get the new PS5.

The PS5 is similar to the MD Radeon RX 5700 XT and the Nvidia RTX 2070 Super as it can deliver 9.2 teraflops of performance when playing games. Games can be optimized for PS5 GPU which improves performance compared to PC.

Unlike the previous generation of consoles the Xbox One and PS4, the new generation has closed the distance between consoles and PC gaming. In this article, I will explain how good the PS5 GPU is compared to modern graphics cards such as the RTX 2080 and a bit older 1080 Ti.

Is the PS5 GPU better than PC?

The PS5 10.28 teraflops of power are equivalent to the MD Radeon RX 5700 XT and the Nvidia RTX 2070 Super based on real-world teraflop output and gaming at the same resolutions, frame rates, and graphical settings.

The PS5 claims to hit up to 4K resolution and up to 120 FPS in games. The catch is that developers need to optimize games to hit the higher resolution or frame rate. Call of Duty Warzone allows players to run the game at 120 FPS on the PS5. This works if you have a high refresh rate screen that supports HDMI 2.1.

Hitting 4K 120 FPS is not possible right now on PS5. You have to pick either higher-resolution or improved frame rates. As more developers optimize games for the new hardware, it might be possible that we get games that hit 4K 120 FPS, but I would not expect to see that early on in the console cycle.

It is safe to say that building a PC with the same performance as the PS5 is not possible in the same price range. That is why the PS5 is incredible value for money if all that you are going to do is gaming. As long as the game is optimized, the PS5 is going to run games at 60 FPS at 1080p, which is what most people are going to be aiming for.

While GPU pricing is getting better, the price of the graphics card alone is going to be more than the price of the PS5. It is going to take a few weeks if not months for the prices of GPUs to go back to normal but if you want something to game on right now then the PS5 is something that I do recommend. What Graphics Card Is Equivalent To PS5?

The PS5 potential of 10.28 teraflops(it uses 9.2 teraflops when gaming) makes it similar to the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT (9.75 teraflops) or the Nvidia RTX 2070 Super (~9 teraflops).

The in-game experience should be similar but you do not have the same level of flexibility on the PS5 compared to PC. You can tweak a lot of settings on PC and change the resolution in order to hit the resolution and frame rate that you want.

The in-game experience is going to depend on optimization. If a game is optimized for PS5 and ported to PC, chances are that it is going to run better on the PS5 as compared to the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT or Nvidia RTX 2070 Super. On the other hand, the experience might be similar if the game is made for PC from the ground up like Destiny 2 but that is something very rare.

Is PS5 better than 1080 Ti

The performance of the PS5 GPU is similar to the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT and the Nvidia RTX 2070 Super. The PS5 GPU has a modern architecture, faster clock speeds, and better RAM.

The 1080 Ti is pretty old at this point, uses an older architecture, and has lower clock speeds. The PS5 GPU has a clock speed of 2233 MHz while the 1080 Ti has a base clock speed of 1481 MHz and can boost to 1600 MHz.PS5 also supports ray-tracing which the 1080 Ti does not handle too well. The PS5 uses 16 GB GDDR6 memory while the 1080 Ti has 11 GB of older GDDR5 memory.

Is PS5 Better Than GTX 1070?

The PS5 GPU features a modern architecture, a better manufacturing process, and higher clock speeds as compared to the GTX 1070. Developers have an easier time optimizing their games for the PS5 hardware. These are some of the reasons why the PS5 GPU is better than the GTX 1070.

The GTX 1070 has a clock speed of 1506 MHz and can boost to 1683 MHz. The PS5 GPU runs at 2233 MHz. The GTX 1070 also uses older GDDR5 memory and does not support real-time ray tracing either.

If your curious on how to setup on raytracing on PS5 please see my article.

PS5 CPU Intel Equivalent

The PS5 CPU has 8 cores and is based on the AMD Zen 2 architecture. That would be on par with the AMD Ryzen 7 3700XT. The Intel equivalent would be the i7 10700 or the latest i7 11700F. Both of these CPUs feature 8 cores and 16 threads.

The i7 11700(amazon link) is a bit cheaper than the non-F variant as it does not have integrated graphics. It does have a base clock of 2.50 GHz and can boost to 4.90 GHz. This makes it an ideal pick for a PS5 equivalent gaming PC build.

The i7 10700 is a generation older but it is a solid performer that has a base clock speed of 2.90 GHz and a boost clock speed of 4.80 GHz. You can save some money by going with the older variant.
