Is 400 Mbps Good Enough For Gaming? (Learn Why It’s FAST)

Internet speed is crucial for a smooth gaming experience, is 400Mbps good enough for gaming? I’ll explain everything you need to know.

Good internet is speed is at or above 25 Mbps, with good internet speeds being 100+Mbps, so 400Mbps is more than good enough for gaming. But latency, upload and download speed, ping, and if your internet is wired or wireless are important factors for online gaming.

Want to know how to increase internet speed for gaming, what is a good Mbps for gaming and if gaming affects internet speed? Well, in this post I will explain all these questions and more.

What Is A Good Mbps For Gaming?

25 Mbps is a good Mbps for gaming, for the best gaming experience you need low ping, no higher than 20 milliseconds, low latency, and low packet loss. The minimum internet speed for gaming is between 3 to 6 Mbps for games that require minimal reaction time.

Before, I explain more about internet connection speeds it’s important to know the different terms and what they mean.

Internet Speed Terminology

  • Lag- The delay between a games server and a player
  • Latency-How quick your gaming device sends information from the game servers to the console or PC, higher latency increases the response time which is bad
  • Ping-Ping is a measurement of latency, in milliseconds, the lower ping the better as it means the response time is faster
  • Packet Loss– When information before reaching a game server is lost, due to too many people on the network this is measured as a percentage, package loss of more than 1-2% causes problems when gaming online.

To play most games you need 3Mbps download speed and 1Mbps upload speed, these are also the minimum required internet speeds for the PS4 and Xbox One.

To see how you get the best internet possible on the PS4 check my post, to get the best internet for Xbox One check this post out.

Although speed isn’t the most important factor for online gaming connection is critical for a fluid gaming experience, wired internet is far better than wireless wi-fi connection.

We use wireless connections everywhere, whether sitting having a coffee at Starbucks or using our phones, but no connection is better than a good old fashioned wired internet connection.

Wired Ethernet For Faster Connection

Wired internet will get you the most reliable connection for online gaming. Although Wi-fi connection has come along way in recent years, the waves Wi-fi uses are reduced by many factors.

  • Obstructions in your home such as walls(especially brick), doors, and floors
  • Distance between your router and your PS4
  • Inferences from other devices using the same wi-fi connection, such as your smartphone or another console

These factors will reduce the “packets” (data transfer) or cause the packets to be delayed which is called latency, which will reduce both your download speed and internet speed

With an ethernet cable like this super-fast one from Amazon, the internet travels via a physical cable so obstructions like your house wills will not affect your internet connection, giving you a far smoother gaming experience. Check out this post here for more information.

Most people know the differences between a wireless and wired connection, but there are 5 different types of internet connection, some you might not have heard of

Different Types Of Internet Connection

  • DSL– DSL stands for digital subscriber line, this connection is created by a telephone line usually made of copper, giving a theoretical speed of 100Mbps but DSL is usually slower than 100Mbps and will vary between place to place due to infrastructure
  • Coaxial Cables– These are used in cable TV, they offer much faster stable connections than DSL but the speed and quality of the service vary greatly depending on the internet service provider
  • Fibre Optic- The most modern form of internet connection, it uses light to transmit data giving the fastest more stable connection possible, but they are the least extensive internet connection type many people lack access to fiber-optic where they live.
  • Satellite Connection-An orbiting satellite that creates a connection with the internet, it isn’t limited by ground infrastructure as it only needs an antenna but it is quite expensive, has lower speeds, and tends to have latency issues
  • Mobile Networks. Internet connection used for mobile phones and its speed is entirely dependent on the network coverage, the price to speed ratio is very high, don’t game with a mobile internet connection, stay with DSL Coaxial cables and fiber optic.

How To Increase Internet Speed For Gaming?

  1. Check your internet speed and bandwidth connection by doing an internet speed test
  2. Switch from wireless to wired ethernet connection
  3. If using Wi-fi move your device closer to your router, to remove obstructions
  4. Play on a Local server
  5. Restart your Router
  6. Replace your router
  7. Update your system to the latest version

No matter what you do, you should check your internet speed using a connection test, a popular one is speedtest.net, access it here, as otherwise, you won’t know if any of the changes improved your connection.

Does Gaming Affect Internet Speed?

Gaming does affect internet speed, but a streaming video service like Netflix or YouTube especially 4K video has the biggest impact on internet bandwidth, second to uploading and downloading big data files.

The exception to this. is if you’re running a server, as the server keeps track of everyone on the server which uses a lot of internet bandwidth, so does voice cha,t downloading new games and updates but playing games off a disc uses no bandwidth at all.

In a typical home, you have a large number of devices connected to the same internet connection simultaneously, not only laptops or gaming consoles, but tablets, mobile phones all use internet bandwidth.

With phones, there are apps that regular get updates on a background level which uses a lot of data, video streaming is the largest data eater and voice chat like with Skype or Facetime eats up a lot.
