How To Reduce PS4 Fan Sound Without Opening It

1. Place Your PS4 In A Well Ventilated Area

Your PS4’s goes into rocket man mode when the console is hot and the fan needs to start to reduce the internal temperature. Of course, this will cause the jet engine sound you like so much. An easy fix is to move items away from your console if there is anything surrounding it.

Please make sure to leave enough space around both the sides and back of your console to ensure good airflow for the PS4’s fans so they don’t overheat. Never put coats or bags near the PS4 or especially anything flammable near the PS4 as the console gets quite hot making it a fire hazard.

I called Sony customer support and they suggest around 8-12 inches of space between the PS4 and anything. Make sure you do that and it should make a difference to your PS4’s van ventilation system.

2.Set Your PS4 To Vertical

If you set your PS4 to vertical you will clear up some airspace allowing your fans to get more airflow which should reduce the amount of heat they are generating and therefore reduce the sound of your console.

Though be careful with having your console vertically as if the console falls when a game is playing it will likely scratch the disc inside potentially ruining it. I remember this happened with my COD 4 disc on my Xbox 360 and I cry ever since I remember it, make sure you don’t suffer the same fate!

This cooling vertical stand from Amazon the best one I tried and actually has an air vent hole at the bottom allowing both protection and adequate airflow for your console, a win-win.

3. Turn Off/ Reset Your Ps4

If your PS4 suddenly starts making extremely loud fan noises then perhaps it is due to an internal bug in its CPU that’s causing the fans to be so loud. The solution would be restarting or turning off the console and see if it resets itself and the fan noise reverts back to normal

Never take the plug socket out of the main power without restarting or turning off your PS4 via the button or the menu as doing so can corrupt your PS4 or your game files and you don’t want that!

4. Use A Can Of Compressed Air To Clean Your Fans

Despite all the fixes mentioned above assuring adequate 8-12 inch space for the airflow of your PS4s fans and etc. If you have dirt in your fans then all these methods will not help. You need to use a can of compressed air that you can buy from most electronic stores or try this one from Amazon that is Cordless and Portable with no gas.

With every method, you need to go through all the inputs and vents to ensure all the dust is removed from your PS4. NEVER use a vacuum cleaner to clean your PS4 as the air is hot and will likely cause damage to your PS4’s electronics making it unusable and you don’t want that!

How To Clean Your PS4 With Can Of Compressed Air Or Alternative

  • 1. Unplug all extension cords from your PS4 so you have access to all of its compartments. Move Your PS4 to a clean surface for easy access and cleaning
  • 2. Take your compressed air can or alternative and fire short bursts of air in all the open compartments of the console. Make sure to hit the USB parts and all the ports at the back of the PS4. Make sure to shoot an airburst at the top of the PS4 to clear up any excess dust build-up
  • 3. Use A Microfibre cloth to clean up all the dirt you got from your console. Be careful to start towards the left side so the dust does not ruin the light sensor. Repeat this on the other side of the console but wipe towards the right side. Fold the cloth in half to ensure the clean side faces out and clean all parts of the PS4
  • 4. Lastly, dust the area where your console will be placed before putting the PS4 back. Wipe any fingerprints you might have left on the console and you’re done! Your console will thank you!

Do this method around once a month to ensure your PS4’s fans are as clean as possible. Check the video below on a handy tutorial on how to clean your PS4’s fans with a compressed air can or no gas alternative.

Sony’s PS4 Warranty Rules

As previously mentioned opening up your PS4 will void the warranty and depending on who you purchased your PS4 from it will have 1 year of warranty left. Do not void the warranty if your PS4 falls in this period as you can simply send your PS4 to Sony and they will fix your fans or any other hardware issues completely free of charge.

This is a quote directly from Sony’s services official website.

“In general, Sony offers a standard 1-year guarantee that covers almost all Sony products. Some exceptions such as lamps, projectors and batteries have a more limited guarantee.

“If you do need a repair, you will have to show your original purchase documents. If you don’t have these, you will be charged for any repairs. Don’t worry, if you are certain you are within dealer warranty, your dealer should have copies available”

This is how you can claim your warranty for your PS4 directly from the PlayStation website

“You must visit PlayStation Service Request Support or call 1-800-345-7669 to receive a return authorization and shipping instructions. A VALID PROOF OF PURCHASE IN THE FORM OF A BILL OF SALE OR RECEIPT FROM A RETAILER WITH THE DATE OF THE ORIGINAL PURCHASE MUST BE PRESENTED TO OBTAIN WARRANTY SERVICE”

This is Sony’s official warning against disassembling or modifying the system or its accessories which is the same for the PS4 & PS4 Pro. Can’t say I didn’t warn you!
